Vocabulary Quizz - 001

Hi, it's the first of the weekly vocabulary quizzes today.

It's dead simple....

I list five words. The one thing they all have in common is that this time last week, I did not know what any of them meant. You see how many of them you know without having to look up.

If you don't know the answer, there's a small clue under each one to help you make a guess.

Photobucket

1. Sartorial

The word was found in an article about ties.

2. Aphenphosmphobia

Also known as Haphephobia, if someone tells you they suffer from this affliction, do not give them a sympathetic hug.

3. Loquacious

The ladies on the bus do this.

4. Pyrrhic

An adjective used to describe the outcome of a battle.

5. Flagitious

A negative trait.

Some guys on the Digital Point forum hooked me up with a way to do this, where you click on a button that says "reveal" and it shows the answer.

Sadly this "reveal" system will not work until I move from blogger to wordpress.

In the meantime, the answers are available in the comment section.
Mark yourself using the honour system.

The current score to beat is 0/5, how did you do?

Assignments completed : 1/30

I've switched to a white background as I think it looks better.

Anyway, here are the answers according to my dictionary.
If your definition is also correct, you still get the point.

1. Sartorial

Of men's clothes.

2. Aphenphosmphobia

Fear of being touched.

3. Loquacious

Chatter chatter chatter, talkative

4. Pyrrhic

A pyrrhic victory is one that comes at too great a cost.

5. Flagitious

To be deeply criminal, utterly villainous.

Hi there. You might check your feed link -- looks like it's pointing to the wrong thing. I found your feed by clicking on the chiclet, however. No worries. Nice blog.

I'm 1/5. Loquacious is in my blog title. The others, upon first glance, looked like diseases to me.

That's where I found it Jillian.

1/5 is good to take the lead so far.

Hi John, thanks for dropping by. I'll look into the feed link thing

Problem sorted now John, thanks for the heads up.

1/5 the only one I knew was Pyrrhic it comes from the name of King Pyrrhus who managed to beat the Romans but lost almost everything :)

Still beats me, well done

Pyrrhic I knew - I've even played a recreation of the Battle of Asculum in a computer strategy game way back.

Sartorial I'd always assumed just meant 'to do with clothes', rather than men's clothes exclusively.

Aphenwhatsit I guessed from the clue. All the -phobias I don't count as proper words. :)

Loquacious I had heard of but thought it meant something else (lazy).

Flagitious I'd never heard of.

I think that's 2 and a half out of 5, which makes you the leader.

We stand in awe of your wordiness great leader.

I knew 3 and 4 and guessed 2 correctly. I thought 1 just referred to clothing in general, so I stand corrected. And I didn't have a clue on 5.
What's my score?
(Good fun, by the way!)

Three and a half!

You really are sharp with your words.

I knew them all 'cos I read the comments.

Does that count?
